Program Description more...

East Carolina University’s Department of Physical Therapy has been educating clinicians to serve the needs of our state and beyond for nearly 50 years. The undergraduate BSPT program was established in 1970. The program transitioned to the MPT degree in 1996, and to the DPT in 2005. The DPT is a three-year, 106 semester hour program that includes 32 weeks of clinical education.

ECU PT has a long history of a strong commitment to entry-level PT education, cutting edge research, and engaged service to the institution, community and profession. Graduates are recognized for their advanced preparation and professional abilities in musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary and integumentary systems in patients of all ages. The faculty are accomplished academic professionals and distinguished in their respective clinical areas. They represent specialty certifications and professional concentrations in the PT disciplines of pediatrics, neurology, prosthetics, sports medicine, orthopedics, and geriatrics. All faculty are actively engaged in research either in clinical settings or in our well-equipped motion analysis labs and muscle physiology lab. Many faculty also practice through our faculty practice. All DPT students participate in faculty research during their time at ECU. Students provide pro bono PT services to underserved people in our community through their Student Run Clinic, and actively serve the community in many other ways throughout the year. Our graduates do quite well on the national PT licensure exam (97-100% 1st time pass rate), and most choose to remain in NC to serve the needs of our citizens.
