A Message from the Department Chair:

Welcome to the Department of Physical Therapy at Thomas Jefferson University!

If you want a career that involves helping people of all ages to meet their individual health needs and improve their quality of life, then physical therapy is the field for you. If you want to pursue a physical therapy degree from a highly ranked program with a great reputation, located in a dynamic medical environment, in a vibrant urban setting, with faculty committed to graduating students who are prepared to practice in tomorrow's healthcare environment, then the DPT program at Thomas Jefferson University is the program for you!

Jefferson's Department of Physical Therapy offers a two year and nine months entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) post-baccalaureate program based on a clinical problem-solving approach to healthcare issues. The curriculum features a strong basic science background with emphasis on evidence-based physical therapy practice and a variety of opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience through laboratory, simulations, and clinical education experiences. Graduates of the program are not only prepared to examine and treat individuals with cardiopulmonary, integumentary, musculoskeletal and neuromuscular problems, they are also prepared to provide patients with information on injury prevention and to develop health maintenance programs for people at all stages of life. They are prepared to apply scientific knowledge, humanistic values, critical analysis, and a systematic approach to patient care when making clinical decisions.

A Jefferson education involves more than simply learning the skills and facts that a physical therapist needs to know; students also learn how to adapt quickly to today's dynamic healthcare environment. The curriculum emphasizes the development of professional core values in concert with the APTA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, such as respecting the rights and dignity of patients, acting in a trustworthy manner, and maintaining and promoting high standards for physical therapy practice, education and research.

Decisions are granted on a rolling basis throughout the cycle until the class is filled, as a result, early application submission is highly recommended. Admissions Interviews, for qualified candidates, are a part of the admission process. Interviews begin in September and continue until the program is full. Decisions include: Offer of Admission, Denied Admission, Hold for Grades and Waitlist.

All prerequisite science courses must be completed within 7 years of application to Jefferson and must be in an on-campus format. Non-science courses can be completed in an on-campus or online format. Courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or above to be eligible for transfer. A grade of “C-“ or below will not be eligible for transfer. While a grade of a “C” is required for a course to be eligible to transfer, admission to the program is competitive and we prefer to see a grade of “B” or better for admission.

If courses were repeated, the original and repeated grade are calculated into the cumulative overall GPA. The highest grade earned is used in the prerequisite science GPA calculation, if a course was repeated.

Demonstration of English Language Proficiency:

All international students and U.S. permanent residents must demonstrate English language proficiency as one of the conditions for admission to Jefferson. The Doctor of Physical Therapy program will accept any one of the following items to satisfy the proficiency requirement:

• Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with an overall score of at least 87 and individual section scores as follows: Writing: 21, Speaking: 23, Reading: 21 and Listening: 22.*

• Associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

• At least 60 college credits earned from no more than three (3) U.S. regionally accredited colleges or universities.

• U.S. national or state licensure or certification in a nursing or allied health field.**

• Citizenship from a country where English is an official language.

*Report TOEFL scores on PTCAS and request official scores to be sent to Jefferson via our TOEFL school code 2903.
** Certain certification may not be sufficient to demonstrate proficiency.
