The Professional Doctoral Program is a full-time professional preparation program in physical therapy. Graduates of this program receive a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree and are eligible to apply for licensure as physical therapists throughout the United States. The mission of the Department of Physical Therapy Education is the education of students to become generalist physical therapist professionals who are reflective, competent, compassionate and autonomous, and who are prepared to meet the changing physical therapy needs of society.

PTCAS applications must be submitted by January 15th, the applicant will have until February 1st to submit a completed application to our Admissions Office.  A completed application consists of the following:



  • Verified PTCAS application
  • Letters of Recommendation (sent via PTCAS)
  • Official GRE scores (GRE code 0387)
  • SUNY Upstate supplemental application
  • Supplemental application fee


The SUNY Upstate supplemental application information will be sent to each applicant upon receipt of their verified PTCAS application.

One letter of recommendation must be from a liscensed physical therapist and we would prefer the second letter to come from a science professor or other faculty member.

International students who have completed all or part of their education abroad are required to have a course-by-course educational credential evaluation completed by an approved agency prior to the application deadline and sent directly to PTCAS.

After you select the program and enter your coursework on the application, you may be required to match your courses to the program's course prerequisites in the "Prerequisites" tab of the "Program Materials" section.
General information
Only grades of "C" or higher are acceptable. Higher grades are required for a competitive admission application. All prerequisite courses must be completed by June 1 of the year of proposed entrance. All science requirements must include laboratories, and courses for science majors are recommended. Admission preference is given to applicants who have taken course sequences for science majors.
