    Program Description
Located in Abilene, Texas and founded in 1891 by a dedicated group of ministers, ranchers, and merchants, Hardin-Simmons University continues its commitment to developing the minds and nurturing the spiritual lives of its students through its mission to provide “an education enlightened by faith.” The Department of Physical Therapy at HSU was founded in 1995 and became the first private school in the great state of Texas to offer the entry-level Physical Therapy program and the first to offer the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. The core value statement of the program is "Exemplifying excellence and integrity through lifelong learning, service, and faith." These values are displayed in the classroom, clinic, and community and modeled by a faculty who are actively engaged in clinical research, practice, and professional service. In the classroom, students receive an outstanding, personalized education guided by experienced and talented teaching faculty who mentor students both professionally and spiritually. Qualified students must be motivated, dedicated, self-driven learners. The small class size of 28 students (7:1 student:faculty ratio) creates a collegial environment where leaders are crafted who strive for distinction in the classroom, clinic, and community. The fast-paced 28 month curriculum includes 37 weeks of full-time clinical rotations in a variety of settings as well as completion of a directed research project. Additionally, as the ONLY entry-level PT program in the country to work with the international organization of "Joni & Friends" (joniandfriends.org) students spend up to 3 weeks in the summer immersed in hands-on experiences as Short Term Missionaries (STM's) at Family Retreat in Texas and in Lima, Peru as part of the "Wheels for the World" and Connect2Ministries program. Students may earn a special certification in "Beyond Suffering" as a result of this involvement. Integrated clinical experiences begin the first week of the program through the PT Department’s Campus Clinic, the Abilene community Medical Mission (serving homeless and under served neighbors), and other medical facilities in the local area. Our individualized approach to clinical placements allows HSU PT to match each student’s interests and needs with experienced clinical faculty at more than 400 health care facilities across the country. Multiple opportunities exist for students to participate in community service events, sponsored continuing education courses, and an annual mission trip where their faith is put into action. As a result, our students leave with more than a degree – they also build an impressive resume! The HSU PT program’s outcomes include graduation rates, licensure pass rates, and employment rates which consistently exceed the national average while maintaining tuition costs below many other private schools in the country. Come join us for an exemplary education that is built on integrity, ethics, excellence, and the prayerful support of our Christian community.
